IKEA Cabinets vs Custom Cabinets – Which One is Worth It?

When you’re remodeling your kitchen or upgrading your space, cabinets are one of the biggest investments you’ll make. So the question becomes: Do you save money with IKEA or invest in a custom cabinet built locally here in Sacramento? 🤔
In this post, we’re doing a real-life cabinet comparison based on a side-by-side test we actually performed in the shop. We assembled a $100 IKEA wall cabinet and then built a custom cabinet with the same dimensions using hardwood plywood and real joinery — just like we do for our clients here at Arden Cabinet in Sacramento.
We tested both for:
🛠️ Assembly time
🏋️♂️ Strength (300 lb shelf test!)
✨ Aesthetic details up close
🧱 Materials inside each box
💰 Price difference — and is it worth it?
Whether you’re a homeowner, business owner, contractor, or a DIY builder, this article will help you decide which cabinet makes the most sense for your project in Northern California.
What We Tested (Cabinet Showdown Overview)
To make this comparison fair, we made sure both cabinets were:
the same size
installed the same way
tested using the same amount of weight
We wanted to know how prefab cabinets compare to custom cabinets when it comes to real-world performance, not just price tags and Pinterest photos.
Assembly Time: Fast vs Handcrafted
IKEA Cabinet🕒 Unboxing to full assembly took just 45 minutes. It’s convenient, fast, and anyone with a screwdriver can put it together. Perfect for renters, college students, or when you need a quick solution in a flip home or ADU.
Custom Cabinet🕒 Took about 5 hours to build in our shop. We used hardwood plywood, table saws, joinery methods, and woodworking tools — this is true craftsmanship, built piece by piece.
👉 If speed is your #1 priority, IKEA takes the win. But if precision, craftsmanship, and long-term function matter more, the time investment in custom cabinetry pays off.
Strength Test: How Much Weight Can It Hold?
We conducted a shelf strength test by loading dumbbells onto each cabinet until it failed.
IKEA Cabinet collapsed at 310 lbs, snapping the shelf in half and blowing out the back panel.
Custom Cabinet held until 360 lbs, and even then, the shelf itself didn't break — only the shelf pins gave out.
That tells us a lot 🔍 — the material integrity of custom cabinets is far superior, especially for heavy use in kitchens, pantries, garages, or commercial properties.
Materials & Construction: What’s It Made Of?
Let’s break down what’s really inside:
Feature | IKEA Cabinet | Custom Cabinet |
Core Material | Particle board / MDF | ¾” hardwood maple plywood |
Back Panel | Thin MDF | ¼” Maple plywood backing, nailed |
Joinery | Cam locks & screws | Real joinery, nailers, glued edges |
Hanging Bracket | Metal bracket at top only | Top & bottom nailers for full support |
Particle board can sag, absorb moisture, and blow out under pressure — which is important to consider in California homes where temperature and humidity change. Custom plywood construction is significantly stronger and more stable over time.
Aesthetic Details: Up Close & Personal
From a distance, both cabinets look clean and minimal — but up close, the differences are obvious:
IKEA
✅ Sleek, modern
❌ Noticeable edge banding
❌ Visible gaps and hardware
❌ Less alignment accuracy with doors
Custom
✅ Tighter door reveals
✅ Real wood grain texture
✅ Better alignment, cleaner edges
✅ Finishing quality is much higher
Price: $100 vs $1,200 — Who Wins?
Let’s be real — cost matters. A lot.
IKEA cabinet: $100. Perfect for rentals, starter apartments, student housing, or quick fixes.
Custom cabinet: $1,200+. Ideal for homeowners upgrading their forever home, high-end kitchens, or businesses that need durable cabinetry that lasts 20+ years.
Think of custom cabinetry as a long-term investment. It increases property value, lasts a lifetime with proper care, and can be built to your exact size, color, and layout.
